Vans Apply Eco Theory to Sustainable Skate Classics
have figured out how to make their canvas plimsoll skate shoes more environmentally friendly by implementing a new ‘Eco Theory’, which results in greater use of sustainable materials and less impact on the ecosystem.
The SoCal skate brand is achieving this by using organic cotton for the upper of iconic models including the , , and , which are all decorated in the iconic checkerboard pattern – now printed using water-based ink. Accompanying this friendlier fabric is shoelaces made from jute fibre, plus cork-lined UltraCush insoles. The most significant tenet of the Eco Theory range is the rubber used for the signature vulc soles, which is sourced from certified suppliers practicing ethical and sustainable processes. Vans promise that the durability and grip is just as high as before, and is also bonded to the uppers using water-based glue!
‘Sustainability has to be at the forefront of Vans for the future,’ said Vans Professional Surfer Dane Gudauskas. ‘It’s a fantastic moment to own the space and contribute to a more sustainable way of producing.’
The Eco Theory is available now from Vans in a number of additional colourways to the checkerboards pictured above. Hopefully Eco Theory is applied to more Vans shoes moving forward.
