Converse are keen to remind sneakerheads of their prowess beyond the basketball court with their expanding Utility series. The latest addition, the Utility Explore, is built for all conditions and situations – a versatile model that combines the ruggedness of boots with the flexibility of sneakers. Let’s traverse the tech found in the chevron brand’s newest adventurer.
Designed to be atypical of anything previously seen outdoors, this model taps into established thinking while introducing new ideas. On paper (or, in this case, screen), elements including suede and mesh uppers, rubberised toe caps and thick lugged tread may evoke the old-world ruggedness of classic hikers. However, take a look at the final product – the Utility Explore is anything but traditional.
There’s a lot to unpack here. On the bottom, the Converse Traction Utility rubber soles look like they’ll stick to just about every surface. Above that is the dual-layer foam midsole, with the upper portion blending seamlessly into the aforementioned rubber toe cap and mudguard. Details get even more interesting further up, as the traditional lace system is supported by an innovative buckle and strap, whereby its anchor points can move along the ‘Rail_Adaptive_Design’ panel.
These impressive features are highlighted across two seasonally appropriate colourways. Beige and brown are perfect street sweepers when the leaves begin falling, while the dark brown and terracotta option can probably traverse the sorts of terrain where there’s no mobile reception.
